Real Concepts in Men’s mental health

Mental health is a state of our mind’s well-being that enables people to cope with the stresses of life, realize their abilities, learn well and work well, and contribute to their society. It is an integral component of health and well-being that includes our individual and collective abilities to make decisions, builds relationship and shape the world where we live. Mental health is a basic human right. And it is important to personal, community and socio-economic development.

Mental health is more than the absence of mental disorders. It  is experienced differently from one person to the next, with varying levels of difficulty and distress and potentially very different social and clinical outcomes.

Mental health conditions include mental disorders and psychosocial disabilities as well as other mental states associated with significant distress, impairment in functioning, or risk of self-harm. People with mental health conditions are more likely to experience lower levels of mental well-being, but this is not always or necessarily the case.

COVID 19 Aftermaths

Many cases in India have been seen, have mushroomed in thousands where men have lost their loved ones during COVID. Precisely in hindi, ‘Akaal Mrityu’ or untimely demise of people. Covid have been a low state and depressing phase for every ones life, lockdowns, away from family, loss of people etc. Men have suffered a lot, taking care of families, safety, security, arranging daily needs, food, shelter and still then not been able to save their people.

LOSS..!! Here lies a deep loss to men, where most of the men HESITATE to tell their pains.

Determinants of mental health

Our lives, multiple individual, social and structural factors may combine to protect or undermine our mental health and shift our position on the mental health continuum. Individual psychological and biological factors such as emotions, substance use and genetics can make people more vulnerable to mental health problems.

Exposure to un-favorable social, economic, geopolitical and environmental circumstances – including poverty, violence, inequality and environmental deprivation – also increases people’s risk of experiencing mental health conditions.

Risks can manifest themselves at all stages of life, but those that occur during developmentally sensitive periods, especially early childhood, are particularly significant. For example, harsh parenting and physical punishment is known to undermine child health and bullying is a leading risk factor for mental health conditions.

Protective factors similarly occur throughout our lives and serve to strengthen resilience. They include our individual social and emotional skills and attributes as well as positive social interactions, quality education, decent work, safe neighborhoods and community.

Each 1risk and protective factor has only limited predictive strength. Most people do not develop a mental health condition despite exposure to a risk factor and many people with no known risk factor still develop a mental health condition. Anyways, the interacting determinants of mental health serve to enhance or undermine mental health.

Men are often taught not to openly express their emotions because it is considered “a sign of weakness” by many of us in their own society and communities and family. About 40 per cent of Indian men do not even talk about mental issues freely, experts say.

Men really need to talk about their mental health, that too often. Watch the video here:

Every 7th Indian man is shivered up by the mental health disorders, caught by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) research. The suicide death rate for men has increased from 18.7% to 23.4%. 10-34-year-old men’s suicide rate is the second-highest leading and fourth leading in the case of 30-35 years old.

Men do face different depression symptoms like sudden anger, screaming, aggression. Depression is a feeling of sadness or frustrated for days. It is a mood based disorder that hampers the working and thinking abilities of men. Men use alcohol and drugs as a cover and act as escapism.
