Bhadla Solar Park (India) : World’s Biggest, 10 things to know

Bhadla Solar Park

(World’s Largest Solar Power Plants By Capacity)
India’s Bhadla Solar Park is the world’s largest solar park as of the time of the blog. It has the capacity to generate 2,245 megawatts of electricity alone, much enough to power 1.3 million homes across.

The Bhadla Solar Park is a solar power plant which is located in the Thar Desert of Rajasthan, India. It covers an area of 56 square kms and has a total installed capacity of 2’245 megawatts (MW), making it the largest solar park in the world as of 2023. The park was developed in 4 phases since 2015, with $775 million in funding from the Climate Investment Fund and $1.4 billion in funding from other sources.

The park which contributes to India’s renewable energy goals and helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 4 million tons per year.

Its Development

The Bhadla Solar Park was started by the Rajasthan Renewable Energy Corporation Limited (RRECL), a joint venture between the Government of Rajasthan and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). The RRECL has identified Bhadla, a remote area in the Phalodi tehsil of its district, as a suitable site for the solar power generation due to its high solar irradiance, low population density, and availability of government-owned land.

In its Phase I in 2017, NTPC Limited auctioned 420 MW to several developers including Fortum of Finland. In Phase II, Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) has auctioned 250 MW which includes the under construction AMP Energy Bhadla Solar Power Plant and NTPC Bhadla Solar Power Plant. In Phase III on May 11, 2017, ACME Power has won 200 MW and Softbank Group (SBG) has won 300 MW. In Phase IV on May 9, 2017, Phelan Energy Group won 50 MW, Avaada Energy won 100 MW and SBG Cleantech consortium won 100 MW.

SECI tendered bids for the remaining 750 MW in June 2017. After completion in December 2018, the solar park achieved a total installed capacity of 2,055 MW, making it the largest solar park in the world as of 2023.

Its Impact

The Bhadla Solar Park is one of the projects of India’s National Solar Mission, which aimed to install 100 gigawatts (GW) of solar power. The park also helps India meet its commitments under the Paris Agreement to reduce its carbon intensity by 33-35% by 2030.

According to the study by the World Bank, the park has multiple benefits for local economy and the environment. The park has created about 10,000 direct and indirect jobs during construction and operation. The park has also improved the quality and reliability of electricity supply in the region. The park has also reduced the dependence on fossil fuels and avoided about 4 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year.

Bhadla Solar Park (India) : World's Biggest, 10 things to know

As per Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis, IIWFA, out of 10 largest parks being constructed in the world, 5 happens to be in India. World’s largest solar park is being constructed in Rajasthan and is known as Bhadla Solar Park, India.

Bhadla Solar Power Plant is a 2245 Megawatts plant and situated on 14000 acres of land. Earlier China was the leading producer of solar energy but now India even though the late joiner of the race is way ahead of China. Know about this Solar Park in detail below.

Bhadla Solar Plant: All You MUST Know

  1. The project commenced in 2015 with an investment of $1.4 billion.
  2. The temperature in Bhadla ranges from 46 to 48 degrees and it is defined as uninhabitable by experts.
  3. The entire project was divided into 4 phases. In the first phase of the park’s establishment, solar panels were established to produce 65 MW of energy.
  4. The first two phases of the park were developed by the Rajasthan Solar Power Park Company Limited.
  5. Saurya Urja Company of Rajasthan developed the third instalment.
  6. The project in its final stage was designed by Adani renewable energy park. The capacity of the project was 500 MW.
  7. The nearest urban habitation is 50 kms from the solar power plant. It is situated in Phalodi. This project is a part of a 1,00,000 megawatt solar energy grand plan, overall capacity.
  8. As per the main developer BK Dosi, this region receives good radiation the whole year. 10 million solar panels have a generation capacity of 2245 megawatt.
  9. The solar panels are cleaned by robots and are monitored by humans.
  10. Coal has a 70% share in India’s electricity generation which is a matter of environmental concern.

The auction for this park was surprisingly lower than NTPC with a per-unit price as low as INR 2.62. NTPC is as high as INR 3.20 per unit.
