Shri Hanuman Chalisa : The composition

Jai Shri Hanuman Chalisa was composed by Goswami Tulsidas in the 16th century in Awadhi language. It is a poetic work dedicated to Lord Hanuman in which the virtues, valour and pure character of Hanuman , the ardent devotee of Lord Rama in the Hindu religion , are described in forty quatrains .

This is a very short composition in which a beautiful praise of Pawanputra Shri Hanuman ji has been done. It has a heartfelt prayer to Bajrangbali ji, and the personality of Lord Shri Ram has also been depicted in simple words. The word ‘chalisa’ means ‘forty’ (40) because this praise has 40 verses (excluding the 2 couplets of the introduction). Hanuman Chalisa has been written by devotee Tulsidas ji.

Religious significance

Although it is popular all over India, it is especially famous and popular in North India . Almost all Hindus know it by heart. In Sanatan Dharma, Hanuman Ji is considered to be the epitome of valor, devotion and courage. Hanuman Ji, who is considered to be the Rudra avatar of Lord Shiva , is also known by the names Bajrangbali , Pavanputra, Maruti Nandan, Kesari Nandan, Mahavir etc. It is believed that Hanuman Ji is immortal. Meditating on Hanuman Ji daily and chanting his mantra removes all the fears of man. It is said that reciting Hanuman Chalisa removes fear, removes sufferings, it proves to be a pacifier. Thinking about its deep sentiments awakens devotion in the mind along with great knowledge.

By worshipping Bajrangbali on Tuesday and Saturday, the devotees get relief from troubles and all the wishes of the person are fulfilled. There is a special importance of reading Hanuman Chalisa on these two days because it removes all the sorrows and troubles of life. It is believed that Shanidev also showers his blessings on Hanuman devotees. Reading Hanuman Chalisa on Saturday also reduces the wrath of Shani Sadhesati and Dhaiya.

The authorship of Hanuman Chalisa is attributed to Tulsidas, a 16th-century Hindu poet, saint and philosopher. He mentions his name in the last verse of the hymn. The 39th verse of Hanuman Chalisa states that whoever chants it with devotion to Hanuman Ji will be blessed by Hanuman Ji. Among Hindus around the world, it is a very popular belief that chanting Chalisa invokes the divine intervention of Hanuman Ji in serious problems.

It’s History

Shri Goswami Tulsidas

Once Akbar called Goswami Ji to his court and asked him to introduce him to Lord Shri Ram. Then Tulsidas Ji said that Lord Shri Ram appears only to his devotees. On hearing this, Akbar put Goswami Tulsidas Ji in prison.

In prison, Goswami wrote Hanuman Chalisa in Awadhi language. As soon as the writing of Hanuman Chalisa was completed, monkeys surrounded Fatehpur Sikri and attacked it. Akbar’s army was also unable to stop the terror of monkeys. Then Akbar followed the advice of a minister and released Tulsidas from prison. As soon as Tulsidas was released from prison, the monkeys left the entire area. After this amazing incident, the glory of Goswami Tulsidas spread far and wide and he became known as a great saint and poet. His works, including Ramcharitmanas, are celebrated with high recognition and festivities in Hinduism!
