WORLD’s biggest BlueBerry, Guinness World Record, 5 Facts

World’s Biggest Blueberry

An Australian farm has clicked a record for world’s biggest blueberry with a fruit the size of a small play ball.

Seen in November and stashed in a freezer since then, the monster sized was almost 4cm wide and weighed in at 20.4g approximately – about 10 times the average blueberry. This title was previously held by a 16.2g berry grown in the Western Australia.

Blueberry : How Huge

The specimen is of new variety developed by the Costa Group, to meet consumer demands for the larger berries. Brad Hocking says the breed regularly gives huge fruit, but recent growing conditions have sparked a super crop at their farm in Corindi in northern New South Wales. His team had noticed some promising berries on the trees but were shocked and “stoked” when they were weighed.

“It wasn’t really until we put them on the scale that we realized what we have found,” the senior horticulturalist told the news reporter. “This record-breaking fruit was obviously particularly large, but we would have picked 20 or more fruits on that morning that would have been seen as broken the previous world record.” After 12 weeks, the berry was finally certified by Guinness World Records as the heaviest ever.

So what does a world-record breaking blueberry taste like? Sir Hocking laughs and says he doesn’t know either – while tempting, his team have decided to save the berry from an immediate end, and instead ate its adjacents.

“We get second breakfast every day, we don’t have to eat this one,” he said. And now the growers are considering what to do with it. “There’s been a few ideas, maybe like a resin cast and mounting it on the wall or something.” But in general, the Eterna berries – while larger – don’t compromise on flavor, he promises. “It’s a different experience, eating a berry that is that large.

“We see it more as people who are consuming them as snacks, more than maybe the traditional uses in breakfasts and baking. But certainly, the flavor and the firmness is there – it’s got a really nice crunch to it and a high level of blueberry aromatics.”

The giant fruit, which is the size of a golf ball, was picked in November at a farm at Corindi, managed by Costa Group, in the NSW Mid North Coast, one of AUS’s largest blueberry growing regions.

The biggest berry came like 39.31mm wide and weighed 20.4 grams, around 10 times the average weight of a bluberry – typically between 1 gram and 3.5 grams.

The blueberry belongs to the new Eterna variety developed by the company in response to consumer demand for larger berry sizes across Australia. It has been a world marker turf for Australia now, they are on high demand for berries.

“While the fruit is very big, there’s absolutely no compromise on any quality or flavor as would be expected when developing a premium variety blueberry,” The team told local news that they knew they were onto a record for some time as their farmers had been reporting bigger and bigger berries for a while.

Other notable fruits that appear in the Guinness World Records include a strawberry weighing 289 grams (10 ounces), grown by an Israeli farmer Chahi Ariel, which has earned the record for world’s heaviest strawberry in February 2022.

And in August 2019 a monster grapefruit broke two records and became world’s heaviest and largest grapefruit. Weighing more than 7 pounds 14 ounces and measuring 28.75 inches, it was about the size of a regulation basketball and weighed as much as a baby or a chihuahua.
